I’m vegetarian and I like to visit the gym, so to get enough protein into my diet I tend to eat quite a lot of eggs. Unfortunately, I am terrible at getting a perfect boiled or poached egg, yokes are either hard (overdone) or the broken egg contains what looks like jelly (undone). I tried a few egg timers from Apple’s App Store but they were either not very good or had an awful UX so, during the spring of 2013, I decided to design and build an egg timing app of my own.
Primarily I undertook the project for 2 reasons - Firstly, solve my inept egg boiling skills and secondly give me some real world experience of designing for and coding a native iOS app in Apple's (at the time) new coding language - Swift.
Starting with wireframes, moving into a basic prototype and finally applying a final design style I aimed for something quick and simple to use. Once built and deployed to Apple’s app store I also created a simple, single-page promotional website to showcase the app in more detail.
Eventually, due to other work commitments, I was unable to keep up the maintenance of the app and so removed it from Apple’s App Store, however, it was a great learning experience, lots of fun to build and use. The project and its associated research enlightened me to all of the aspects that can affect how long boiling can take from the more obvious size or weight through to the less well known, such as altitude and room temperature.
